CHANGE IN ATTITUDE: A way to a 0% jobless Filipino

For Filipinos, education is the only treasure you can give to your children that can never be taken away from them forever. Parents will do everything, even if it means selling their farm carabaos, lot, house or if it means leaving the family to work abroad. It is almost like a measurement of being a good parent. If you cannot send your children to school, it means you are not good enough as a parent. It is like, once their children get a diploma, it is a confirmation that they are a good parent and a guaranteed bright future for their children.

It is also common for parents to tell their children to study hard and finish it whatever it takes for them to get a stable job in the future. They don't want them to get a job outside the profession they are in and enter a career which are not within the field of the course they took in college. Working in a BPO company or being a call center agent and other jobs which dont require a degree is a no no for it is not a professional career. But midst this culture, the Philippines is still suffering to an average of 9.09% unemployment rate from 1994 to 2013. This data is far from the promised future of this Filipino attitude. With these, I can see several improvements that we can do to lessen the burden and increase the success for every well educated Filipino.

Believe me or not, this is all about a CHANGE IN ATTITUDE!

Yes, we are very industrious, very caring, very resourceful, patient, friendly, courteous and  other great traits which made us very in demand as workers abroad. However, we can be better than Overseas workers, we can be more respectable than what we are now. What we need are little amendments to the culture dictated by our roots. Let's enumerate them one by one.

Being choosy for a job is a wrong move.

As I sighted, we don't want to accept jobs which are outside the field of our degree. Sorry guys but I think working outside your field of expertise is far better than staying at home, slacking like a big burden to your parents. Yes, your parents are willing to support you as long as they can but this should not be the case. Start accepting jobs which are available for you at the moment but continue looking for other opportunities which will be according to the course you finished in college. Through this, you will be able to support yourself, will  earn, enhance your skills and work attitude and will also be able to get an additional experience to put your curriculum vitae which might be an advantage for future employment.

For example, you accepted a Call center job while you are looking for work abroad. While working as an agent, you could already improve your writing, reading and speaking skills which will be a great advantage for future exams and interviews, especially in dealing with foreign customers in your job outside the country. You could also earn money which you could use in processing papers and requirements asked by your future employer. Dealing with irate customers will enhance your patience, work ethics and self-control which you could definitely use for tough clients you will be dealing on your next job. Speaking English language fluently is definitely something that will give you a step forward than other applicants who can't, these things and more.

Accepting other opportunities will also open more doors for you. As unique individuals, we have different talents and passions. Some of us might not happy to the course we took in college. Some of us might not be compatible to the work we are looking for. Some of us might not be comfortable to things or works asked from us by our job. Then, try other fields first for you to make up your mind and look for the best job for you. Finishing a degree doesn't mean that you should be nailed to that field forever. You might be more successful to other fields outside the path you took. There are nurses who became successful businessmen and businesswomen, there are accountant who found out that they are great painters, teachers who became wonderful florists. We have talents and abilities which we could actually use to give us a living, better than the life we could get if we took the strict path of the field we are in.

Working hard to get a job is good, but working hard to create jobs is far better.

We we're raise with constant reminder that we should finish our studies to get a stable job, but there is a better future than ending as an employee, and that is ending as an employer. Dying as a CEO of a company is not a bit compared to dying as the owner of that company. We were never raised to be a business owner and that's a big mistake Filipinos are doing until now. One great example that we can look at if ever we will take the road to a business-minded country are the Chinese. here in the Philippines, we see them as business owners and they own big businesses. They start small but they can make it grow to a company because they we're raised and trained to be business owners. As they grow up, they already acquired the attitude and knowledge they need to be a good businessmen and employers not like us, we we're raised and trained to be good employees.

I know, starting a business is risky, but we Filipinos already have the traits of being a good businessmen, but what we lack is our attitude towards money and spending. Let me show you the advantages of owning a business through an example. If I am a company owner and you are my best and trusted employee, I'll pay you 50,000 as salary just to be the CEO or Manager, and handle all the work for my business . 50,000 is really big as a salary and as what your job demands you will use all your knowledge, talents and skills to make the business grow and earn millions. Yes, you might be getting 50,000 a month in exchange for your hard work, but that's not even a slice of the millions you and your capabilities are bringing to me while I am relaxing because you are doing most of my work. I as the owner of the company can take advantage of all the things you can do and all the things you know, the same with my other employees. If only you are the owner of the company, you might be the one earning all the millions. As an employee, you are working hard while exploiting your talents, skills and knowledge basically for the improvement of the company you are working at, but if you are a business owner all your gifts will be used all for your self progress.

Other than that, If only some Filipinos will start owning businesses, unemployment will be decreased tremendously if not vanished. If there will be 10 people who are unemployed and 1 of them will own a business which will need 9 employees to work for him, then there will be progress for all Filipinos. Let's not wait for foreign investors, let's invest in our country and create jobs for our fellow countrymen. If Pinoys will start building businesses, jobs will be created, jobs more than the needs of the population of the unemployed Filipinos and OFWs might start coming back to our country to work. More business in the Philippines, higher the economy will become, and more foreigners will invest. A consistently great economy will result to a higher value of peso, products will be of low costs or/and we will have a higher value salaries. If Filipinos will be business minded, we might stop exporting our labor force and start importing, we will definitely solve brain drain in the country and might even end up flooding the Philippines with foreign workers. A great future for this third world country I am presenting here, please work with me.

Maybe, we already focused too much in improving our educational system and did not even gave a damn on how we will be able to maximize that good education. We already tried many strategies on improving our educational system but we are not getting any results. Maybe we are already giving good education to our hard working students and that could be proven by the Koreans and other foreign students who choose to study in the Philippines. This time, it could be better to plan on how we can make better use of that good education we are giving. Are you not amazed by people who did not finish college but were able to grow a big business or were able to earn more than what you earn even if you finished a degree? It is not luck but hard work, open mind and some common sense. They used what they know and what they can do. Those who know something about raising pigs used it to grow a piggery and became big suppliers of pork meat. Those who know something about handicraft started to sell his or her products and became big exporter of native stuffs. This is something we should learn at long ago but we never did, so now I am giving you a chance to learn from it again.

We have so many great people here in our country and you are one of it, I'm sure. But all of them are just leaking and used outside the country or by foreign business owners. Maybe, I already found the solution to everything and I am taking courage to share my maybe stupid ideas. But, at least I tried and I am very happy that I did. Now, if you have the guts, if you have the balls, if you want to be part of a progressive country, help me and let's make this country the best!!!!
